The examination procedure

Psychology has famous claims that did not survive its own checking — and findings more stable than their reputation. From the outside both look alike: a well-told story with a number in it.

LEGEND here means: widely retold but not covered by the sources — the number is off, the twist came later, the detail is invented. FINDING means: it holds up in the record as the study documents it. Every correct verdict counts; every resolution explains the evidence in two or three sentences and names its source.
